The Best Time to Take Collagen: Morning, Night or With Food?
There is no proven best time to take collagen. The trials we cite gave a set daily dose for weeks and did not test morning against night or food against an empty stomach. So pick a time you can repeat every day, with food if it suits your stomach. For the wider picture, see our guide to collagen supplements UK.
Does the time of day matter for collagen?
On current evidence, not in any way we can measure. The skin trials gave participants collagen once a day for 8 to 12 weeks, and timing of the dose was not something they tested. We found no trial in which one group took collagen in the morning and another at night, and no study showing that either time gives better skin, joint or tendon results.
A 2026 systematic review of oral collagen and skin found hydration improvements from around 4 weeks and elasticity improvements at around 12 weeks. Those numbers depend on regular use over weeks, so the best time is the one you will still be using in month three.
Beware of claims that collagen must be taken at a precise time, or that it is wasted if you miss the window. Nothing in the research we reviewed supports that.
Should I take collagen with food or on an empty stomach?
Either works, and it is mainly a comfort question. Collagen is a protein, so it is digested like other protein whether you take it with breakfast or on its own.
Taking it with food is a sensible default if you have a sensitive stomach, because mild digestive symptoms such as bloating are among the few side effects reported in studies. If you notice discomfort on an empty stomach, move it to a meal. Our post on collagen side effects and safety covers when to speak to a GP.
Pick one pattern and stay with it. Changing the time every few days makes it easier to forget.
Is morning or night better?
There is no evidence either wins, so choose by routine:
|
If your routine is... |
Try taking collagen... |

|
Regular breakfast at home |
With breakfast, next to something you already do |
|
Rushed mornings |
In the evening with dinner or while you make a hot drink |
|
Prone to forgetting |
At the same moment as another daily habit, such as brushing your teeth |
|
Active, with early workouts |
After your workout alongside your usual meal or snack |
Some small early studies have looked at taking collagen with vitamin C around exercise for tendon and joint support. The findings are preliminary, so we do not recommend building a routine around them.
How do I take each Proto-col format?
Follow the label on your product. The usual pattern is:
-
Liquid sachets: one sachet a day, taken straight from the sachet or mixed into water or a smoothie.
-
Capsules: your daily number of capsules with water. Check your product page for how many to take and whether they can be split across the day.
-
Powder: mixed into a drink or food. See low dalton collagen for how our powder differs.
Some of our products also contain vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation. If yours does, you do not need to time it separately from your collagen. Our post on combining collagen with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C explains the evidence.
How do I make collagen a habit?
Consistency is the one thing the evidence clearly supports, so these tips are worth more than any timing hack:
-
Attach it to something fixed. The kettle, the coffee machine, brushing your teeth, or putting on your skincare.
-
Keep it visible. A box in a cupboard is easy to forget. A sachet beside the kettle is not.
-
Use a reminder for the first month. A phone alarm or a tick on the calendar is enough.
-
If you miss a day, carry on as normal. Do not double up the next day.
-
Remove the reordering step. Subscribe & Save delivers your next pack before you run out, and Proto-col sells every product in this post.
Give it at least 8 to 12 weeks before judging. Our existing post on how long collagen takes to work sets out a realistic timeline. [Link to be confirmed against the live post.]
Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a fish, shellfish or beef allergy, or take regular medication.
FAQs
Can I take collagen at night?
Yes. There is no evidence that evening dosing works any worse or better than morning.
Should I take collagen before or after a meal?
Either. Take it with food if you get an upset stomach on its own.
Can I take collagen with a hot drink?
Often yes, but check the label and see our post on taking collagen with coffee, alcohol and other supplements.
Can I split my daily dose?
Follow your label. Some capsule doses can be spread across the day, but a once-daily sachet should be taken once.
