Collagen Side Effects and Safety: What the Evidence Says
Collagen supplements are generally well tolerated, and side effects reported in studies are uncommon and mostly mild. The most common are digestive, such as bloating or nausea. Some people should check with a GP or pharmacist first, including anyone who is pregnant, allergic to fish or beef, or on medication. For the full guide, see collagen supplements UK.
Is collagen safe to take?
For most healthy adults, the evidence suggests yes. Reviews of clinical trials report that oral collagen peptides are usually well tolerated. A clinical reference database notes that collagen peptides have been used with apparent safety at doses up to 10g a day for up to six months, and up to 40g a day for up to four weeks.
Two points of context matter:
-
Most trials were short, typically weeks to a few months, so long-term evidence is more limited.
-
Many studied a specific branded ingredient, so results do not automatically apply to every collagen product on the market.
In the UK, food supplements are regulated as foods, not medicines. That makes it worth choosing a brand that tells you exactly what is in each serving and publishes its testing.
What side effects can collagen cause?
The side effects reported in trials and clinical summaries are mostly mild:
-
Bloating or a feeling of fullness
-
Nausea or indigestion
-
Diarrhoea or constipation
-
Flatulence
These are described as uncommon, and they usually settle on their own. If you notice them, try taking your collagen with food, and speak to a pharmacist if they continue.
Skin reactions are rarer still. One database entry notes a mild skin rash reported with a specific collagen peptide product. A case report in a systematic review described a severe skin reaction in a healthy 30-year-old woman after taking collagen supplements. A single case report cannot show that collagen caused the reaction, but it is a good reason to take any new rash seriously.
Stop taking collagen and get medical help straight away if you develop hives, swelling of the lips, face or tongue, difficulty breathing, or a spreading rash with blistering. Call 999 if you have trouble breathing.
Who should speak to a GP or pharmacist first?
Collagen is not suitable for everyone, so check first if any of these apply:
|
If this applies to you |
Why it matters |
|---|---|
|
You are pregnant or breastfeeding |
There is limited research on collagen supplements in pregnancy and breastfeeding |
|
You are allergic to fish or shellfish |
Marine collagen comes from fish, so it is not suitable |
|
You are allergic to beef or cattle products |
Bovine collagen and some capsule shells contain beef-derived ingredients |
|
You take prescription medicines |
The interactions between collagen and medicines are not fully understood |
|
You have kidney disease or have been told to limit protein |
Collagen is a protein, so it adds to your intake |
|
You have had cancer, or are being treated for it |
Speak to your oncology team before any supplement |
|
You have a medical condition and are unsure |
A pharmacist can check your medicines and conditions in a few minutes |
Collagen is also an animal product, so neither marine nor bovine collagen suits vegetarians or vegans. Some products labelled 'vegan collagen' do not contain collagen at all.

Does collagen interact with medicines or other supplements?
The honest answer is that the evidence is incomplete. Reference sources say interactions between collagen and medicines are not fully understood. We found no well-documented interactions, but the lack of data is not the same as proof there are none.
If you take regular medication, tell your pharmacist or GP what you are adding. Some of our collagen products also contain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc, so add up your totals if you take other supplements. Our post on taking collagen with coffee, alcohol or other supplements covers this in more detail.
How do I choose a safe collagen supplement?
-
Check the ingredients list for allergens (fish, beef or gelatine) and anything you avoid.
-
Look for the dose per serving and the name of the peptide used.
-
Prefer brands that use third-party testing for purity, particularly for fish-derived products.
-
Avoid products making dramatic claims, such as reversing ageing or curing joint disease.
-
Follow the dose on the label. Taking more has not been shown to work better.
FAQs
Can collagen cause bloating? Some people report bloating, especially when starting. Taking collagen with food often helps, and a pharmacist can advise if it persists.
Does collagen cause cancer? We found no evidence that collagen supplements raise cancer risk. If you have a history of cancer, speak to your oncology team before taking any supplement.
Is collagen safe in menopause? Collagen is widely taken by women over 40, and several trials enrolled women in their 40s to 60s, with side effects described as uncommon. That is general evidence, not personal advice. Check with your GP if you take hormone therapy or other medicines.
Can I take collagen every day? The trials we cite gave collagen daily for weeks to months. Follow the label and speak to your GP if you have a health condition.
