How Much Collagen Should You Take a Day?
There is no single correct dose. The skin trial we rely on used 2.5g of VERISOL B a day, while trials on tendons and cartilage used 5g and 10g. The right amount depends on your goal and on matching the product to the dose that was tested. Our guide to collagen supplements UK shows how to put that into practice.
What dose of collagen did the research use?
The table below lists the dose in the research we cite for each goal, next to the daily collagen in the matching Proto-col product. They are not always the same, and we say so where they differ.

Dose in the research |
Study details |
Proto-col product and daily dose |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Skin: wrinkles and elasticity |
2,500mg VERISOL B |
114 women aged 45 to 65, double-blind and placebo-controlled, 8 weeks |
Pure Collagen Capsules and Radiance Collagen, 2,500mg. Beauty Collagen, 10,000mg+ |
|
Tendons |
5,000mg TENDOFORTE |
20 people with Achilles tendinopathy, 3 months |
Complete Collagen contains 3,000mg of TENDOFORTE plus 5,000mg of VERISOL B, so the TENDOFORTE dose is below the trial dose |
|
Cartilage |
10,000mg FORTIGEL |
Human and animal research, summarised on our Why Collagen page |
Osteo+ contains 1,200mg of FORTIGEL, well below the trial dose |
The tendon trial was small, and most of these studies tested a branded ingredient, so treat each result as promising rather than settled.
Is a higher dose better for skin?
Not on current evidence. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials looked at oral collagen and skin physiology. It found improvements in hydration, elasticity and barrier function, with hydration gains from around 4 weeks and elasticity gains by around 12 weeks. It did not find evidence that higher doses produced greater benefits. It also said the evidence for wrinkle depth and dermal density was less established.
A 2023 meta-analysis of 26 randomised trials with 1,721 participants, with durations from 2 to 12 weeks, reached a similar view: effects were stronger with longer use.
For skin, then, the sensible approach is a trial-tested dose taken consistently, not the largest dose you can find. A 2.5g daily dose of VERISOL B produced measurable changes in the best-known skin trial, and 10g liquids are not shown to do more.
Is more collagen needed for joints and tendons?
The published trials on cartilage and tendons used higher doses than the skin trials, at 10g and 5g respectively. That is why we say joint and tendon support involves a different dose conversation from skin support. Our posts on FORTIGEL and cartilage and TENDOFORTE and tendons set out the research in detail.
Two points matter here:
-
A product containing the same ingredient is not the same as a product containing the same dose. Complete Collagen has 3,000mg of TENDOFORTE and the trial used 5,000mg.
-
Joint pain that is new, severe or getting worse should be assessed by a GP. A supplement is not a substitute.
Is there a safe upper limit?
Collagen peptides have been used with apparent safety in studies at doses up to 10g a day for up to six months, and up to 40g a day for up to four weeks, according to a clinical reference database. Side effects reported in trials were mild and uncommon, mostly digestive. Our guide to collagen side effects and safety covers who should check with a GP first.
Practical rules:
-
Follow the dose on the label. Do not exceed it hoping for faster results.
-
Add up your total if you take more than one collagen product.
-
If you have bloating or an upset stomach, try taking your dose with food and speak to a pharmacist if it continues.
How long should I take collagen to judge whether it works?
Give it at least 8 to 12 weeks. Trials on skin ran for 2 to 12 weeks, with hydration changes showing first and elasticity later, and the tendon trial ran for 3 months. Look for changes you can measure, such as skin that feels less dry or a better score on a simple weekly photo taken in the same light. If you see nothing after 12 weeks of daily use, collagen may not be doing much for you, and that is a reasonable conclusion.
If you are choosing a first product, the Pure Collagen Capsules match the skin trial dose, and Complete Collagen combines two peptides for skin and connective tissue. Proto-col sells both.
Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a fish, shellfish or beef allergy, have kidney disease or have been told to limit protein, or take regular medication.
FAQs
Can I take more than the label says?
No. There is no evidence that going above the labelled dose gives faster or better results, and you should follow the label.
Does my dose depend on my weight or age?
The trials we cite used fixed daily doses, not doses adjusted for body weight. If you are unsure, ask a pharmacist or dietitian.
Does collagen count towards my daily protein?
It contains protein, but it is not a complete protein because it lacks tryptophan. Our post on collagen vs protein powder explains how to think about it.
