  • Meta description: What are collagen peptides, what does low dalton mean, and are tripeptides better absorbed? A plain guide to the science and the limits.

Collagen peptides are collagen broken into short chains so the body can absorb them. Low dalton collagen goes further, using a very small average peptide size, with many chains just three amino acids long (tripeptides). Smaller peptides do reach the blood, but whether smaller means better results for skin or joints has not been proven. For the wider guide, see collagen supplements UK.

What are collagen peptides?

In your body, collagen is a large, tightly wound protein. Eaten whole, it would be too big to absorb intact. Supplement makers use enzymes to cut it into short chains. The product of that process is called a collagen hydrolysate or collagen peptides.

So 'collagen peptides' describes how the collagen was processed, and 'marine' or 'bovine' describes where it came from. A marine collagen supplement is also a collagen peptide supplement. Our post on marine vs bovine collagen covers the source question.

What does low dalton mean?

A dalton (Da) is a unit of molecular mass. The lower the number, the smaller the molecule. Collagen peptide products vary widely in average size, depending on how far the collagen has been broken down.

Form

What it is

Approximate size

Native collagen

The large protein as found in the body

Around 300,000 Da

Standard collagen peptides

Collagen hydrolysed into a mix of peptide sizes

Often around 2,000 to 5,000 Da on average

Low dalton or tripeptide collagen

Collagen hydrolysed further into very short chains

Often 500 Da or less on average

These figures are typical ranges, not exact values. Makers measure and report average size in different ways, so two products labelled 'low dalton' may not be the same. For reference, the tripeptide Gly-Pro-Hyp, the most common three-amino-acid sequence in collagen, weighs roughly 285 Da.

A tripeptide is a chain of three amino acids. The common collagen tripeptide is glycine, proline and hydroxyproline (Gly-Pro-Hyp). Low dalton products aim for a high share of these small chains.

Are smaller collagen peptides absorbed better?

There is a reasonable scientific case, with an important limit.

The case in favour:

  • Digestion breaks proteins into amino acids and short peptides. Di- and tripeptides can be taken up directly through a transporter on the gut wall called PepT1.

  • In a human study from Japan, people took a tripeptide-rich collagen product, a half-tripeptide product, or a standard collagen peptide with an average size of about 5,000 Da. Blood levels of Gly-Pro-Hyp and Pro-Hyp rose after the tripeptide-rich products, in line with how much Gly-Pro-Hyp was taken. The standard peptide contained no Gly-Pro-Hyp and produced only trace amounts.

  • A mouse study found that Pro-Hyp, formed from Gly-Pro-Hyp, reached the skin. That finding is from animals, so it is a clue and not proof for people.

The limits:

  • Standard collagen peptides are absorbed too. A 2024 crossover trial in healthy volunteers found that fish, porcine and bovine collagen hydrolysates each delivered hydroxyproline-containing di- and tripeptides into the blood.

  • Higher blood levels of a peptide are not the same as better skin, joint or tendon results. We did not find outcome trials showing that low dalton products work better than standard peptides at matched doses.

  • The best-known skin trials, such as the 114-women VERISOL B study, tested a branded collagen peptide at 2.5g a day, and were not run on products sold as low dalton tripeptide collagen.

In short, low dalton collagen is a legitimate and interesting format. It should not be sold as proven to be stronger.

What is Proto-col Low Dalton Tri-peptide Collagen Powder?

It is our newest collagen product: a 100% pure collagen powder, with no added vitamins, flavours or extras. It suits people who prefer to keep their stack simple, who like mixing collagen into drinks or food, or who want a tripeptide-rich option. [Editor to confirm from the product page: collagen source, collagen type, dose per serving, and the stated peptide size and tripeptide content.]

Like all our collagen, it should be taken daily and consistently, and results in trials built over weeks, not days. You can see the details on the Low Dalton Tri-peptide Collagen Powder page. Proto-col sells this product.

What should I ask when choosing a low dalton collagen?

  • What is the average molecular weight, and how was it measured?

  • What percentage of the peptides are tripeptides?

  • Is the source marine or bovine, and which collagen types does it contain?

  • What is the dose per serving, and is it backed by trials on this exact ingredient?

  • Is it independently tested for purity?

If a brand cannot answer these, treat bold claims about absorption with caution.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a fish or beef allergy, or take regular medication. Read more in our guide to collagen side effects and safety.

FAQs

Is low dalton collagen better than normal collagen?

It is absorbed efficiently, but we found no outcome trial showing it works better than standard collagen peptides at the same dose.

What is a tripeptide?

A chain of three amino acids. The most common one in collagen is glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.

Are collagen peptides the same as hydrolysed collagen?

Yes. Both terms describe collagen that has been broken down into short chains.

Is low dalton collagen marine or bovine?

It can be made from either. Check the product page for the source.
