What is menopause?

What is menopause?

"Did you know…by 2025, there will be over 1 billion women experiencing menopause in the world? That’s 12% of the entire world population."

(according to the United Nations, World Population Prospects 2019)

Menopause is the time that marks the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle & fertility and is diagnosed after 12 months without a menstrual period. The ovaries no longer produce oestrogen & progesterone.

Stages of menopause

Stages of menopause

Oestrogen & Progesterone

Oestrogen & Progesterone

Oestrogen (produced by the ovaries) levels in women vary throughout the lifespan in relation to a woman’s reproductive history. During the menopause, oestrogen levels rapidly decline which can contribute to hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, hair loss or less hair growth and decline in collagen and skin thickness.

Similarly, to oestrogen, progesterone (produced by the adrenal glands) also plays an important role in women’s health. Progesterone levels also decline during the menopause which can contribute to weight gain and memory loss.

Testosterone

Testosterone

Did you know…testosterone is not only a ‘male’ hormone?

Testosterone is also produced in small amounts in the ovaries & plays an important role in women’s wellbeing. Testosterone peaks in women’s 20s and naturally declines with age and can lead to fatigue, loss of libido and osteoporosis.

During the menopause, although oestrogen and progesterone production stops, testosterone still gets produced by the ovaries. This can cause a rise in androgenic symptoms including increased facial hair, male pattern baldness, weight gain, anxiety and acne.

Collagen loss during the menopause

Collagen loss during the menopause

During the ageing process, skin loses its firmness, resulting in wrinkles and a loss of elasticity. Lines and wrinkles form as collagen starts to deplete. This depletion starts in the mid-twenties. During the menopause, skin quickly loses collagen. Studies show that women’s skin loses about 30% of its collagen during the first 5 years of menopause. After that, women lose about 2% of their collagen per annum.

General symptoms

General symptoms

"Not all women will experience menopausal symptoms, up to 80-90% will have some symptoms, with 25% describing them as severe and debilitating" – The British Menopause Society

"Symptoms can last for months or years and can change with time. For example, hot flushes and night sweats may improve and then you may develop low mood and anxiety. Some symptoms, such as joint pain and vaginal dryness, can carry on after your periods stop" – NHS.

Why a day & night formula?

Why a day & night formula?

We understand that menopause looks and feels different to everyone. Although there are over 20 symptoms that come with the different stages of menopause, not everyone experiences them – or at the same time, so we’ve created two different supplements that cater to the symptoms that are typically associated with the day and symptoms that only flare up through the night.

What makes our products stand out from the market is that instead of trying to include every ingredient at low levels, hoping to ease most of the symptoms that may arise during menopause, instead, we wanted to focus on separate day and night formulas including high-quality ingredients at high levels to provide the specific benefits required.
