what are the benefits of collagen?
the importance of building beauty from the inside out
- May boost the natural production of collagen within the body
- May help improve the elasticity of the skin
- May produce noticeable signs of the skin becoming firmer with a reduction of lines and wrinkles
- Readily absorbed by the body because it allows protein to be bio-available and water soluble
- May aid the repair and regeneration of ligaments, tendons, joints and bones as well as improving the connective tissue of the skin
- May help stabilise the body’s immune system and neutralise the production of abnormal molecular structures which are known to be a major cause of joint problems and stiffness.
- Provides the raw material for cartilage to rebuild
Numerous scientific studies have reported beneficial effects of collagen supplementation for a variety of problems including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and skin, nail and hair quality!
Collagen is the most common protein found in the body and accounts for one third of the total body protein making up 6% of total body weight (remember 70% of body’s weight is water!).
Studies show that we lose 1.5% of our body's store of collagen every year after the age of 25. Thus by the time we get to 40 we have lost 30% of our store. The results of this are dramatic!
collagen’s triple helix structure
Each collagen molecule resembles a microscopic rope that is extremely strong and flexible. Collagen forms a key part of the extracellular matrix of connective tissue and is found in a huge array of tissues including; hair, nails, skin, bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. The extracellular matrix gives connective tissue types most of their functional characteristics – i.e. the ability of bones and cartilage to bear weight. Thus, when collagen is lost the functional characteristics of the tissue are lost e.g. skin loses elasticity leading to wrinkles. Damage to connective tissue and loss of collagen occurs as a result of a number of causes including; disease, trauma, the environment (including the sun and pollution), ageing and menopause.
Despite collagen being the most abundant protein in the body (approximately 76 percent of the total protein of the body) it is only recently that science has examined the role of collagen supplements in maintaining collagen content in connective tissue (type II collagen) and thereby treating connective tissue disorders including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, as well as skin hair and nail quality. Clinical studies available appear promising and show positive results, with both connective tissue and skin.
skin, hair and nails
Collagen forms a key component of the skin, hair and nails. Collagen makes up 75% of skin (type I collagen) – the largest organ in the body which is significantly affected by the aging process and menopause. It appears that women lose collagen at a faster rate than men during ageing, a process that is accelerated following menopause. A variety of symptoms are increased in post-menopausal women associated with a reduction in oestrogen including; epidermal thinning, declining dermal collagen content, dryness, decreased elasticity, bruising and impaired healing.
A recent study reported a reduction in patchy discolorations, fine lines and wrinkles around the eye following collagen supplementation. The role of collagen in maintaining healthy nails and hair has long been known, with a vast array of topical (creams, gels etc.) products available on the high street. There is a growing recognition for the role of collagen supplementation in promoting hair and nail health.
proto-col collagen is a unique formulation of both Type I and Type II collagen, due to it’s triple helix DNA the body recognises the collagen as similar to the existing collagen already present in the skin. Taking collagen orally can help rebuild the existing collagen stores in the body as well as stimulate the body’s own production. Although tiny amounts of collagen are available in foods that we can buy from the supermarket, the levels of collagen required to maintain or rebuild collagen levels in the body can only be gained from taking a high grade of collagen such as proto-col.
