Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 is important for good overall health and strong and healthy bones.  It’s also an important factor in making sure your muscles, heart, lungs and brain work well and that your body can fight infection.

Your body can make its own vitamin D3 from sunlight.  You can also get vitamin D3 from supplements and a very small amount comes from a few foods you eat.

The vitamin D3 that you get in your skin from sunlight, and the vitamin D3 from supplements, has to be changed by your body a number of times before it can be used.  Once it’s ready, your body uses it to manage the amount of calcium in your blood, bones and gut and to help cells all over your body to communicate properly.

Denatured protein

James Greenwell with proto-col Pro Gold whey protein & collagen, founder and managing director of proto-col

Denatured protein is probably a term that you haven’t even heard of, but we would like to explain exactly what it means.  As with all things there are those people who don’t fully understand the term and then spread misinformation that can be very confusing.

Firstly let’s look at what Whey protein is and how it is manufactured:

Whey protein is a high-quality protein naturally found in milk products.  It is a “complete” protein containing all of the essential amino acids required of the human body and is easy to digest.  Whey protein is also one of the best sources of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) including leucine, which has been shown to stimulate muscle synthesis.

The collagen story

James Greenwell, Founder and Managing Director of proto-col and former captain of the GB Modern Pentathlon team turned a career threatening injury in 2003 into a brilliant business opportunity.

Whilst in training for the last international event of his career, James suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg which looked set to end any hopes of competing again with his final competition just 14 weeks away. Turning to his background in nutrition and sports training and with input from his friend and former team-mate Professor Greg Whyte OBE, a former international modern pentathlete and Olympian and now one of the UK’s foremost physiologists, James began a course of powdered collagen – the only form it was available in at that stage.
