Turn up the turmeric

The latest spice craze to hit the capital

Victoria Stewart from London Evening Standard reports

You might have used it in marinades for meat or for vegetables. There’s a chance you’ve drunk it in a juice. And you’ve almost certainly eaten it in a curry. But I’ll wager you’ve never tried turmeric tea.

“We’re aware of just how good lemon and ginger are, but a lemon and ginger tea becomes even more powerful with the addition of bright yellow turmeric and some spicy red cayenne. Turmeric is detoxifying, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial (good against viral and bacterial infections),” says Jasmine Hemsley in her recipe for “Pep-Up Turmeric Tea” from the new book she’s written with her sister Melissa, The Art of Eating Well.

Why is colostrum so good for you?

calf, first milk - colostrum, immune system

What is colostrum?

Colostrum is the first milk that all mammals produce and contains all the antibodies needed to protect the newborn against disease, as well as being lower in fat and higher in protein than ordinary milk.

Newborns have a very immature digestive system and colostrum delivers its nutrients in a very concentrated low-volume form.  Colostrum is known to contain immune cells and many antibodies, which are the major components of the adaptive immune system.

Colostrum is also very rich in proteins, vitamin A, and sodium chloride, but contains lower amounts of carbohydrates, lipids, and potassium than mature milk.  The most abundant bioactive components are growth factors and antimicrobial factors and the antibodies in provide passive immunity, while growth factors stimulate the development of the gut.
